It’s that dreaded time of the day again – time to check the mail. As you sort through the letters, you hold your breath in anticipation until you reach the end and come across an envelope marked “past due” from your credit card company. Rather than letting it ruin your day, this time you’re going to work to get out of debt!

The unfortunate truth is that when you’re in overwhelmed with debt, you’re going to bring a lot of stress into your everyday life. Your financial status can be either the most liberating or crippling part of your life.

It’s easy to let debt get you down in the dumps, but you don’t have to give in. Whether you incurred debt from medical bills, a family member’s passing, or a few ill-advised decisions, you can get out of debt with the help of a change in thinking and mindset.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while you work to climb back from the demands of debt:

You’re Not Alone

Perhaps one of the most important things to remember is that you’re not alone in your debt – about 80% of Americans have some form of debt and over 12 trillion dollars is owed nationwide (Source). There’s no reason to feel ashamed or isolated as a result of your debt – chances are that most people you meet on the street are there too. There’s also hope – Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, and other famously-rich people came from debt to wealth.

Outside of knowing others are in debt like you, you’ve also got the benefits of spiritual intervention working on your side. If you’re feeling helpless and are not sure what to do, you can pray and ask God to give you both the strength to persevere through any negative feelings the debt causes and to provide answers, guidance, and blessings to help you on your journey. God works in any situation, no matter how helpless it may seem. If you’re looking to make an improvement in your life, prayer is a good place to start.

Appreciate What You Have

It’s human nature to always want more from life, and money is no exception. If you browse social media and see people you know on vacations or driving fancy cars, it’s perfectly reasonable to get a little envious. However, rather than letting that envy translate to misery or poor financial decisions, remember that there’s more to life than having or doing fancy things. As nice as it would be to be able to climb into a brand new car and forget about your troubles, the distraction would be temporary and further add to your problem.

A good exercise is to reflect on and write down things you’re thankful for. This can be your friends, family, health, or even internet access allowing you to read this article. This way you can remind yourself that even though you aren’t financially rich (yet!), you’re wealthy in other ways that some people would be jealous of you over.

It’s Not Too Late to Get Out of Debt
